What it changes
The benefits
A roller shutter is a curtain of aluminum slats that rolls up into a housing above the window. Closed, it darkens the room considerably, dampens part of the outside noise and adds a physical barrier in front of the glass. It is a choice for sleep, noise control, or protecting a secondary residence. Performance depends on the model and the installation.
Full darkness
With an opaque slat, a roller shutter literally closes the window: unlike a blind, it lets no sliver of light through at the sides.
Thermal and acoustic insulation
Closed, a roller shutter adds an insulating layer of air in front of the window: less heat coming in during summer, less cold getting in during winter, and a good part of outside noise cut out. The effect is strongest with Thermo and Titan, which have an insulating core.
More security
Even Thermo acts as a visual deterrent in front of a window. Fortis goes further: a resin core, more resistance to impacts and tampering, and optional end retention. Ideal for a secondary residence, a cottage, or simply peace of mind on vacation.
Weather-resistant
Hail, high winds, flying debris: aluminum takes what a blind or a shade could not.
Can be motorized
A button, an app or a remote, instead of a crank to turn at every window. Several shutters can close together, in a single gesture.
Discreet when open
Raised, all that remains is a compact housing above the window: the view and the light are completely unobstructed.
Finishes by product, colours on request
Three to seven finishes depending on the product (white, beige, clear anodized, black, black-brown, dark bronze…) and, for several products, over 1,800 RAL colours in powder coating, on request. The colour stays, and aluminum does not rust or warp over the years.

Components
What makes a good shutter.

The box
The aluminum housing the curtain rolls into, above the opening. Its shape and size depend on the product, the shutter height and the slat thickness.

The guide rails
The rails on each side that guide the curtain. With end retention, locks keep the slats inside the rails: better wind resistance and more pull-out resistance.

The end slat
The last slat at the bottom of the curtain. It holds the locks and, depending on the product, the anti-lift locking.
Anti-lift protection
The lock that limits lifting of a closed shutter: on Fortis and Atlas, to less than one inch once the shutter is down. Available depending on the product: we confirm it at the measuring visit.
The winter kit
Reinforcements in the box and stops at the bottom of the slat, for the contraction of aluminum in the cold. Offered as an option.

What about winter?
Frost, ice and freezing rain can interfere with how the shutter rolls up. A winter kit adds reinforcements to the housing and stops suited to northern climates. If the side tracks are frosted over or the shutter is stuck, don't operate or force it. After an ice storm, check the side tracks before use.
Manual locking
Four locks, from very low to very high.
| Lock | Security | Position | Access |
|---|---|---|---|
| Slide lockHolds the shutter; doesn't prevent a break-in. | Very low | At both ends of the end slat | One side only |
| Slim key lockThe lock side must not face the public. | Moderate | In the centre of the end slat | Both sides |
| Heavy-duty cylinder lockKey or thumb-turn. | High | In the centre of the end slat, protruding housing | One or both sides |
| Padlock eyesPadlock not included. | Very high | At both ends of the end slat | One side only |
Somfy motorization
A motor sized for the shutter.
Four ways to control a VRM shutter, across the whole range: RTS (remote, TaHoma app), RTS with manual override (CMO), wired (wall switch) and wired with CMO. Torque is chosen based on the curtain weight: 15 to 50 Nm in LT50, 60 to 100 Nm in LT60.

Warranty. Roller shutters are covered by Le Gars des Stores for 5 years in residential use and 1 year in commercial use: slats, housing, hardware and installation. The motor, if there is one, is covered for 5 years, in residential and commercial alike. Damage caused by forcing the shutter or by iced-up side tracks is not covered.
Our warranties are in addition to the warranties provided by law.

Frequently asked questions
What customers ask.
Which VRM shutter should I choose?
Thermo for insulation and darkness. Fortis for reinforced security on windows and doors, Atlas for wide openings. Titan for doors and garages. Bastion X, in extruded aluminum, for a rigid barrier. Lumen to protect a storefront without hiding it. We advise you at the measuring visit.
How is it different from a Zip Track exterior shade?
The Zip Track shade filters light and reduces heat while keeping the view. The aluminum roller shutter darkens more, dampens some noise better and adds a physical barrier in front of the glass. The level of security depends on the slats, the rails, the locking system and the installation.
Does it really insulate?
Yes, noticeably: closed, a roller shutter adds an insulating layer of air in front of the window, on top of blocking a good part of outside noise. It is not a replacement for a poorly insulated window, but a real help in summer as in winter.
Is it really secure?
Unlike a fabric shade, an aluminum roller shutter adds a physical obstacle that can slow down a break-in attempt. Fortis and Atlas, with a thick resin core, and Bastion X, in extruded aluminum, offer more resistance; end retention, available depending on the product, keeps the curtain in the side tracks.
Which locking level should I choose?
Options range from the sliding latch to the key lock, the reinforced lock or padlock eyelets. The level of resistance depends on the whole setup: slat curtain, rails, locking, access and installation. We recommend the configuration based on the location and emergency exit needs.
Are VRM roller shutters suitable for an existing home?
Yes. The exterior-mount shutter goes in front of the window, on the facade or in the recess, without replacing the window. In new construction, the box can also be built into the wall.
Are the shutters made to measure?
Yes. We measure at your home; the shutter is configured and made to your dimensions, then installed and set up by our team.
How large can they be?
It depends on the product: from 11 ft wide for Thermo up to about 21 ft 4 in for Titan. Maximum width, height and area depend on each other; we confirm what's possible for your opening at the measuring visit.
Which colours are available?
It depends on the product: three to seven finishes and, for several products, over 1,800 RAL colours in baked powder coating. On-screen colours are approximate: review a sample before ordering. Lead time and price for the colour are confirmed in the quote.
I am starting with a crank; can I motorize later?
Yes, if it is planned from installation: we then install a preparation kit that leaves room for the motor, with no other part to change. The day you want to motorize, we remove the crank and install the motor, no need to take everything apart. Let us know before ordering if that is your plan.
Can an insect screen be integrated?
It depends on the box and rails: we confirm it at the measuring visit. We also install separate motorized exterior insect screens.
Can the shutters be controlled with an app or by voice?
Yes, depending on the motor. With a Somfy RTS motor and TaHoma: app, schedules, scenes, Alexa, Google and Apple. Wired motors are controlled by a wall switch, or as a group for a shop.
How do I maintain a roller shutter?
Rinsing with water and a mild soap from time to time is enough, with no abrasive product. Keep the rails free of leaves and debris. In winter, never operate a shutter stuck in ice.
My shutter won't go up: what should I do?
Don't force it. Check that there is no ice or frost in the rails and wait for it to thaw. If the motor doesn't respond, a motor with manual override (CMO) opens with a crank. If your shutter was installed by Le Gars des Stores, text us at (514) 967-3629: we'll check your warranty.
How much does it cost?
The price depends on the size, the slat type and the operating system. Text us a photo of the opening with approximate measurements (width × height, in inches) at (514) 967-3629 and we will give you a first idea quickly; the firm price comes after the measurements are verified, at the in-home consultation.
