Roll shutter glossary
Roll shutter vocabulary, with French and German equivalents. Handy for reading a spec sheet, comparing quotes or searching for a product online.

| Security shutter | Volet roulant de sécurité | Sicherheitsrollladen | A shutter designed to slow down break-ins: reinforced slat, anti-lift, retention and locking. |
| Exterior-mount (face-mount) shutter | Volet roulant en applique | Vorbaurollladen | A shutter mounted in front of the window, on the facade or in the recess: the retrofit solution. |
| Built-in (recessed) shutter | Volet roulant encastré | Einbaurollladen | A shutter whose box is built into the wall, planned during construction. |
| Top-mounted shutter | Volet à caisson supérieur | Aufsatzrollladen | A box mounted on top of the window and insulated with it, in new construction or window replacement. |
| Slat | Lame | Rollladenstab, Lamelle | The profile that forms the curtain; named by its visible height, in inches (1 1/2 to 3 in in the VRM range). |
| Roll-formed aluminum | Aluminium profilé | Rollgeformtes Aluminium | An aluminum strip formed into a slat, often filled with foam or resin. |
| Extruded aluminum | Aluminium extrudé | Stranggepresstes Aluminium | Aluminum pushed through a die: a solid, rigid slat without foam. |
| Polycarbonate | Polycarbonate | Polycarbonat | A clear, tough plastic used for shutters you can see through. |

| Bottom bar, end slat | Lame finale | Endleiste | The last slat at the bottom of the curtain; it holds the locks. |
| Locking end slat | Lame finale à verrou | Kippriegelendleiste | An end slat that locks the closed shutter against lifting. |
| Anti-lift lock, push-up protection | Antisoulèvement | Hochschiebesicherung | A lock that prevents lifting a closed shutter. |
| End retention, wind locks | Rétention latérale | — | Locks that keep the slats inside the rails: wind and pull-out resistance. |
