What it changes
The benefits
A shutter is a panel of adjustable louvres, mounted in a frame fastened to the window. A rod tilts the louvres; nothing goes up or down. Our American basswood shutters are sanded and stained by hand, then varnished separately to bring out the grain. They can also be made in a triangle, round, arch or angle shape.
It becomes part of the window
Unlike a blind or a curtain, a shutter is permanently fastened: it adds millwork value to the home, not just a window treatment.
No cord, no mechanism
Nothing to raise or lower: the rod tilts the louvres, and that is it.
Insulation and privacy
Closed, solid wood insulates better than a light blind and blocks the view completely when you want it to.
Lacquered, stained, or colour-matched
Lacquered in any Benjamin Moore colour, like paint; hand-stained, in American basswood, for a finish that brings out the grain of the solid wood (the stain and the varnish are applied separately, not in a single pass); or colour-matched, to match the shutter to a piece of furniture or a decor element.
The same wood as our blinds
Our wood shutters and wood blinds come from the same supplier, with the same colour codes: the two coordinate from one room to the next. We compare samples with you before ordering.
Durable
Solid wood, well maintained, lasts for decades: this is not a product you replace as trends come and go.
Special shapes, adjustable louvres
A triangle, arched, round or angled window: the wood shutter is the only one of our products whose louvres tilt in these shapes. Often the only real way to control the light in these windows.
Made in Canada
This product is made in Canada: a local choice, with lead times and follow-up that an imported product does not always allow.
How it works
How it works
- A frame, some panelsThe frame is fastened inside the window recess or surface-mounted around the window. One or more panels, depending on the width, swing from it on hinges.
- Adjustable louvresEach panel holds horizontal louvres linked together, which pivot as one to let in more or less light, without ever fully closing off the view unless you want to.
- A tilt rod, visible or hiddenThe visible rod, in the centre of the panel, is the traditional shutter look. The hidden rod, at the back of the louvres, gives a clear view with no visible hardware at the front: a more contemporary look.
- Four louvre widths1½ in for small windows and the slimmest look; 2.5 in for a traditional look; 3.5 in, the most common choice; 4.5 in for a clearer view and more light per louvre.

Shutter or blind?
A shutter does not go up or down: only the louvres tilt. For a window you want to clear completely from time to time, such as access to a balcony, a blind or a curtain is more practical. The shutter, for its part, offers constant privacy and light control.
Where it goes

The millwork look, in the rooms where you receive guests.
Bedrooms
Privacy and light control, with no cord or mechanism to watch.
Classic or country-style homes
The traditional look of shutters goes well with wood trim and more classic styles.
Specially shaped windows
Triangle, round, arch, angled: where a blind or a curtain cannot fit, a custom shutter can, adjustable louvres included.

Frequently asked questions
We answer
Visible or hidden tilt rod: which one should I choose?
The visible rod, in the centre of the panel, is the traditional shutter look: recognizable and warm. The hidden rod, at the back, gives a clear view with no visible hardware: a cleaner, more contemporary look. Both tilt the louvres the same way.
Which louvre width should I choose?
2.5 in for a more traditional look, or if the window frame is shallow. 3.5 in is the most common choice, a good balance. 4.5 in for a clearer view between the louvres and more light per louvre: a more contemporary look.
Painted or stained?
Painted to match the colour of the walls or the wood trim in the room. Stained to show the grain of the solid wood: a warmer, more natural look.
Can they be motorized?
No, wood shutters have no motorized version: they are millwork, not a mechanism. If you are looking for motorization, our blinds and roller shutters offer that option.
Can you make shutters for an arched or triangular window?
Yes. Wood shutters are custom-made to fit a special shape (triangle, round, arch, angle), and their louvres remain adjustable. Given the precision required, it costs more than a rectangular panel, but it is often the real solution for these windows.
Will my wood blinds and my shutters be the same colour?
They are designed to coordinate: both come from the same supplier and share the same colour codes. We compare samples with you before ordering, especially if you combine shutters and wood blinds from one room to the next.
Can I match the shutter to my furniture?
Yes, with colour matching: we reproduce the exact colour of a piece of furniture or a decor element on the shutter, lacquered or stained. As simple as choosing a Benjamin Moore colour for your walls.
Is it the same thing as a California shutter?
Yes: “California shutter” (persienne californienne) is the name most often heard in Quebec for this product: a panel of adjustable wood louvres, mounted in the window frame. It is exactly what we offer and install.
What is American basswood?
The wood we use for our shutters: light, with a fine, even grain, that works and stains very well. Our shutters are sanded by hand, then stained by hand in two separate steps (stain, then varnish) rather than in a single pass; this brings out the grain rather than flattening it.
How do I care for them?
A duster or a dry cloth on the louvres, from time to time. Solid wood does not like constant humidity: for a bathroom or a humid room, we recommend our PVC version instead.
How much does it cost?
The price depends on the louvre width, the finish and the size of the window. Text us a photo of your window with approximate measurements (width × height, in inches) at (514) 967-3629 to get started; the firm price comes after the measurements are verified: at the in-home consultation, or with your true measurements if you order yourself.
Where do you install?
The West Island and Montreal, Vaudreuil-Dorion, the South Shore, the North Shore, western Laval, and the Eastern Townships with our local team. Elsewhere, depending on the project.
